Purge & Trap is a technology used to analyze trace-level (10-9 concentration, ppb) volatile organic compounds (VOCs, such as benzene series), developed in 1974 by Tom Bellar, a chemical expert at the Environmental Protection Agency in Cincinnati, USA, which increased analytical sensitivity by 100 times compared to existing methods at the time.

Introduction to two application examples of Purge and Trap device

The purge-and-trap device is one of the commonly used sample introduction devices for gas chromatography. Its basic principle is to place the sample to be tested (liquid or solid) into a sealable container (purge tube), use an inert gas at a certain temperature and flow rate to pass through the liquid sample (or solid surface) for a certain period, purge out the components to be analyzed, and then enrich (trap) them by passing them through an adsorption tube (trap) filled with adsorption material. After the purging and trapping processes are completed, the adsorption tube (trap) is rapidly heated to desorb the adsorbed components, which are then carried into the gas chromatograph by the carrier gas for analysis.
